Tire balance marks
I would like more information on the heavy spot and light spot
marking on the aircraft tire. How does the heavy spot of a tire helps to maintain
the balance of a tire?
Thanks for your question. The answer can be found in Advisory Circular
43.13-1B paragraphs 9-8 and 9-18. The heavy spot of the tube is marked
with a yellow line; if it is not marked, use the valve stem as the heavy
mark. Align the yellow line of the tube with heavy spot marked on the
tire (usually a red mark) when installing the tire. When the tire is not
balanced, the heavy spot of the tire will always hit the ground first. The repeated
of impact at one location on the tire will cause excessive wear at one
spot and can lead to vibration problems and premature wear.
